Video Has Come A Long Way

The evolution of video - 142 Productions

With YouTube and online video being the top dogs for viewing videos today, it’s hard to believe that video has been around for as long as it has.  Sony’s Portapak, which was one of the first portable video solutions, was released in 1967!

Gizmodo just released a video, “Untethered: The Birth of Video Art”,  highlighting the history of art and expression using mobile video. In the video, they interview professor Tom Sherman, who discusses the impact that that video has had on our society for both journalism and entertainment. Read the full article here.

When I was young, my family had a super 8mm film camera. When I was 5, I remember acting like a reporter on vacations and give the viewers facts about our trip. I would run and jump around so that I could watch how it looked being played in reverse on the projector.  Later we got a shoulder mounted video camera and I would shoot little movies and music videos with my friends or convince my teachers to make a video on my book report rather than writing one out. Being that we lived on the Space Coast, I was always filming a shuttle launch from the backyard.

Video is now everywhere. It’s on our TVs, on our computers, and on our phones.  In fact, 50% of all mobile internet traffic is dedicated to watching videos and 92% of those users will share those videos with others.

More and more businesses are using videos to advertise their company or sell their products. And knowing that 52% of online consumers say that watching product videos makes them more confident with their online purchases, you can start to understand the impact that video has.

That old super 8 film camera sits on a shelf in my living room to act as a reminder of how far we’ve come and to get excited about where we are going next! What do you think will be next in the world of video?
